William and Kate Reportedly Frustrated by Attention Surrounding Harry and Meghan’s U.K. Return

Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly unhappy with the attention surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after the Sussexes returned to the U.K., with one royal reporter suggesting the situation has created fresh tension within the family.

News24 reporter Chloe Walker said William and Catherine were “absolutely seething” over what she described as the “circus” that has unfolded since Harry and Meghan came back to Britain.

The comments come as the Sussexes settle into an extended stay in the U.K. with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, while Harry prepares for a series of charitable appearances.

Chloe Walker says William and Kate are unhappy

Speaking on Australia’s News24, Walker said William and Catherine were increasingly frustrated by developments surrounding Harry and Meghan.

“They are not happy at all,” Walker said, according to the report. She claimed William and Kate believe the Sussexes are undermining the institution the couple has worked to uphold.

Walker also questioned how quickly tensions had resurfaced following Harry and Meghan’s return.

The Sussexes arrived back in Britain on August 26, 2026, after several years living in California. Their return has brought the strained relationship between the two brothers back into the spotlight, particularly as Harry resumes public charitable work in the U.K.

William and Harry have had a difficult relationship for years. Their physical distance after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 meant that direct encounters were relatively limited. Their return to Britain has created the possibility of the two couples appearing at the same events again.

The Sussexes’ royal status has been formally clarified

The renewed attention comes against the backdrop of a formal message from King Charles.

On September 7, the Lord Chamberlain issued a letter on behalf of the King reiterating that Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the royal family. The letter stated that their His and Her Royal Highness styles remain in abeyance and that their charitable activities are undertaken in a private capacity.

It also described their position as akin to that of private citizens with commercial and charitable interests. The clarification was circulated to senior government, military and regional officials to avoid confusion about the couple’s status following their return to Britain.

The move came roughly two weeks after Harry, Meghan and their children returned from the United States. Reports indicated that the Sussexes’ team was informed of the letter shortly before it was made public.

Could William and Harry be pushed into a private meeting?

Against that backdrop, Walker suggested that William and Kate could be encouraged to meet privately with Harry and Meghan.

Such a meeting, according to the report, could provide an opportunity to reinforce the distinction between the Sussexes and the working royal family before the couples potentially encounter each other at a public engagement.

Whether that conversation actually happens remains uncertain.

Walker described William and Harry as being on poor terms and said they were not currently speaking. She also acknowledged that William has been reluctant to engage with his younger brother, while arguing that some form of communication may now be necessary.

The prospect of the brothers meeting is particularly significant because Harry has several U.K. engagements scheduled. His first major public appearance since the family’s return took place on September 17 at the inaugural Invictus Spirit Gala Dinner and Awards in London. Meghan did not attend the event.

A public reunion could attract intense attention

A future appearance involving both couples could put William, Kate, Harry and Meghan in the same room for the first time since the Sussexes’ return.

That possibility creates another complication. Rather than allowing the focus to remain on the purpose of an official or charitable event, media attention could center on the interaction between the four royals and what it might reveal about their relationship.

The two couples have appeared together publicly in the past, including during the period before Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties. They also made a notable joint appearance outside Windsor Castle following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022.

For William and Kate, any future encounter would therefore carry considerable public interest regardless of whether the four royals interact directly.

Royal biographer says William may feel there is little choice

Royal biographer Duncan Larcombe has also suggested that William could have practical reasons for wanting to speak with Harry privately.

Writing for Women & Home, Larcombe said William was concerned about what Harry’s return to Britain could mean for working members of the royal family. In his view, allowing events to develop without any private discussion could create additional difficulties if the brothers eventually find themselves together at a public engagement.

Larcombe suggested that William and King Charles may therefore feel compelled to seek a face-to-face conversation with Harry about the future and the boundaries surrounding the Sussexes’ role.

Whether Harry would agree to such a meeting is another matter.

For now, there is no confirmation that William, Kate, Harry and Meghan have arranged a private meeting. What is clear is that Harry and Meghan’s return has placed their relationship with the wider royal family under renewed scrutiny, while the palace has simultaneously moved to make their non-working status explicit.

With Harry continuing to attend charitable events in Britain, opportunities for the Sussexes to cross paths with working members of the royal family are likely to remain a focus of public attention.
