Inside Queen Camilla’s Diet: The Foods She Avoids Amid King Charles’ Cancer Treatment
Queen Camilla has made some notable choices about what she eats, and her dietary preferences have drawn fresh attention following King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis.
The type of cancer affecting the King has not been disclosed by the British Royal Family. Amid his treatment and recovery, Camilla has reportedly adjusted some of her own eating habits, including avoiding certain ingredients that have long been absent from her diet.
Her decision has been portrayed as another example of her support for her husband as he navigates his health journey.
The foods Queen Camilla avoids
Camilla has never been particularly fond of several strong-flavoured ingredients. Speaking to the Daily Mail, she explained that peppers are firmly off her menu, whether they are served raw or cooked.
“I can’t bear peppers, raw or cooked. I’m not a fan of offal either, aside from very good liver. And I avoid chilli and garlic too, unlike my son,” she said.
Her list of dislikes includes peppers, chilli and garlic, while she also generally avoids most offal. Liver is an exception when it is prepared particularly well.
These choices appear to be primarily a matter of personal taste rather than a medically prescribed diet.
Why garlic is rarely found in royal meals
Some of the foods Camilla avoids also reflect long-standing practices within the Royal Family.
Royal aides have previously indicated that working members of the family generally avoid garlic because of concerns about bad breath, particularly when they are expected to attend public engagements and meet large numbers of people.
Shellfish is also generally avoided by members of the Royal Family because of the potential risk of food poisoning.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady has previously confirmed that garlic was essentially banned from royal kitchens. He also said that Queen Elizabeth II did not eat garlic.
The restrictions are part of a broader set of food preferences and practices followed by royal chefs when preparing meals for members of the family.
Queen Camilla’s favourite foods are much more familiar
Despite her long list of foods she dislikes, Camilla’s favourite dishes are far from elaborate.
Her son, Tom Parker Bowles, whom she shares with her former husband, Andrew Parker Bowles, has spoken about his mother’s love of simple comfort food.
Among her favourites is baked beans on toast, specifically made with Heinz baked beans. She has also expressed a particular fondness for freshly cooked fish and chips.
“One of my favourite foods is baked beans on toast, always Heinz. And freshly cooked fish and chips, wrapped in paper. That smell, you cannot beat proper fish and chips,” she said.
A personal choice shaped by life with King Charles
Camilla’s approach to food combines her own longstanding preferences with the conventions surrounding the Royal Family.
Following King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis, she has reportedly been more conscious of the foods she eats around him, removing certain ingredients from her own diet rather than tempting him with foods he may be trying to avoid.
While the details of the King’s condition have not been publicly disclosed by the Royal Family, Camilla has continued to carry out her public responsibilities while supporting her husband.
Her decision to make changes to her own diet has therefore been seen as a personal gesture of support during a difficult period for the couple.
