Duchess Sophie Makes Unexpected Fashion Statement Days After Meghan Markle Controversy
The Duchess of Edinburgh has drawn attention for her choice of designer after stepping out in a Roland Mouret dress just days after the French fashion designer revealed details of an alleged dispute involving Meghan Markle and Princess Catherine’s stylist.
Sophie, 61, wore the navy-blue creation during the Sultan of Oman’s state visit to Windsor Castle on Tuesday, October 20. The elegant dress featured an asymmetric bow neckline, long sleeves and the precise tailoring that has become a signature of Mouret’s designs.
Her appearance would ordinarily have been noted for its understated sophistication. However, the timing has attracted additional interest following the designer’s recent revelations about his past dealings with the Duchess of Sussex.
Mouret discussed the alleged fallout in his memoir, I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World, which made headlines just four days before Sophie’s appearance.
It remains unclear when the Duchess selected the outfit. Royal wardrobes for major diplomatic occasions are often arranged well in advance, meaning her decision to wear the dress may have been entirely coincidental.
Nevertheless, the choice has brought Mouret’s relationship with the Royal Family back into the spotlight, particularly given the designer’s established connections with both Sophie and Catherine’s wider royal circle.

Meghan Markle’s Alleged Fallout With Roland Mouret
The controversy centres on an incident that Mouret revisited in his memoir, describing how an apparent administrative mistake allegedly led to a confrontation with Meghan.
According to the designer, he began offering clothing to Meghan in 2016, when her relationship with Prince Harry became public knowledge. At the time, the former actress was attracting growing attention as her romance with the royal became increasingly prominent.
Mouret said he wanted to help Meghan navigate the intense public interest surrounding her changing circumstances by providing her with clothing.
However, the arrangement allegedly took an uncomfortable turn when someone on his team mistakenly contacted Princess Catherine’s stylist at Kensington Palace about the return of dresses that had been loaned to Meghan.
The mix-up reportedly caused considerable embarrassment for the Duchess of Sussex, who, according to Mouret, reacted angrily to the situation.
He recalled Meghan telling him: “You don’t realise what you’ve done! You’ve embarrassed me.”
Mouret further claimed that Meghan said she would never wear his designs again following the incident.
Despite the reported disagreement, their professional relationship did not end permanently. Meghan has since been photographed wearing creations by the designer, suggesting that the alleged fallout did not prevent her from returning to his work.
The Daily Express contacted the Duchess of Sussex’s representatives for comment, but her team declined to comment.

Why Sophie’s Choice Has Attracted Attention
Roland Mouret is already a familiar name in Princess Catherine’s wardrobe. The Princess of Wales has worn his designs on numerous occasions, favouring his sculpted silhouettes for appearances ranging from Wimbledon to significant royal celebrations.
His designs have consequently become an established part of the fashion landscape surrounding the Royal Family.
Sophie’s decision to wear one of his creations so soon after his claims about Meghan attracted widespread attention has therefore prompted fresh interest in the designer’s royal connections.
The timing is particularly notable given Sophie’s close working relationship with Catherine and her reputation as one of King Charles’s trusted supporters.
However, there is no evidence that Sophie deliberately chose the dress to express support for the Princess of Wales or to make a statement about Meghan. Nor has the Duchess publicly indicated that her outfit was connected to the controversy.
The dress may simply have been selected because it was appropriate for the diplomatic occasion and suited Sophie’s personal style.
Even so, the circumstances have created an unexpected link between a formal royal appearance and a story that has recently placed Meghan, Catherine’s stylist and Mouret under renewed scrutiny.

Sophie Has Previously Worn A Designer Amid Public Controversy
This is not the first time one of Sophie’s fashion choices has attracted attention because of the wider circumstances surrounding a designer.
In January, the Duchess of Edinburgh appeared in a striking forest-green suit by Victoria Beckham. Her appearance came just days after Brooklyn Beckham made a series of explosive allegations about his parents, generating considerable attention across the entertainment world.
The claims placed Victoria Beckham and her family under intense public scrutiny.
Sophie’s decision to wear the designer’s clothing was interpreted by some observers as a subtle show of support for Victoria. However, no deliberate message was confirmed, and there was no evidence establishing that the outfit had been chosen in response to the family controversy.
The latest appearance has drawn similar interest, with Sophie once again wearing a designer whose name has recently featured in prominent headlines.
Her navy Roland Mouret dress was entirely in keeping with the polished, understated style she often favours for official engagements. Yet the timing has given the outfit a significance beyond its design.
Whether the Duchess intended to communicate anything through her choice remains unknown. There is no confirmation that the dress was selected in response to Mouret’s claims about Meghan, and it would be premature to interpret the appearance as a deliberate royal statement.
Still, with Mouret’s memoir bringing his alleged dispute with Meghan back into public discussion, Sophie’s decision to wear his work has placed the designer firmly back in the royal fashion spotlight.
