‘Today’ Fans Get the “Ick” Over Craig Melvin’s Vacation Photo — and the One Detail They Couldn’t Stop Talking About

Craig Melvin may have been hoping to give viewers a simple glimpse of his relaxing family vacation, but one seemingly harmless beach photo quickly became the unexpected focus of attention among Today fans.
The NBC morning show co-anchor stepped away from Studio 1A beginning Monday, July 20, for a summer break with his family. A day later, on July 21, Melvin shared an Instagram update showing how he was spending his time away: relaxing by the ocean.
But rather than the scenery, it was what appeared in the foreground of the photograph — Melvin’s feet — that prompted a flood of playful, and occasionally less-than-impressed, reactions.

Melvin’s post showed his feet stretched out toward an ocean view as he enjoyed some downtime at the beach. His message accompanying the picture was simple: he was “out of office,” spending time with family and hoping his followers were enjoying their summer as well.
Many followers responded warmly, wishing the longtime NBC anchor a well-earned vacation and encouraging him to enjoy the time with his family.
Carson Daly, who was also away from Today while working on The Voice, focused on Melvin’s footwear instead, praising his choice of flip-flops and wishing his colleague a good break.
But others couldn’t resist commenting on the feet themselves.
One person joked that “feet ain’t free,” while another suggested it might be time for a pedicure. A third jokingly warned Melvin to make sure nobody tried to sell the photograph. Other viewers simply admitted that feet were not something they particularly wanted appearing in their social media feeds.
Not everyone appreciated the criticism. At least one follower encouraged Melvin to enjoy himself and ignore the negative comments.
What began as an ordinary vacation snapshot had suddenly become one of those lighthearted social media moments where viewers found themselves talking about something the person posting it probably never expected.
Melvin was simply taking a family break

Despite the timing of his absence, Melvin’s time away from Today was a planned vacation rather than a response to the disturbing incident that had recently taken place behind the scenes at Studio 1A.
Al Roker made that clear when introducing former U.S. Men’s National Team player and MLS analyst Taylor Twellman as a guest host during the third hour of the July 20 broadcast.
“Craig is on vacation,” Roker explained before welcoming Twellman.
Twellman subsequently filled in during the third hour, while Sheinelle Jones, Willie Geist, Laura Jarrett and Savannah Sellers were among those helping cover various absences across the show. Savannah Guthrie also began an extended break that week to work on NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show.
Melvin’s wife, Lindsay Czarniak, later offered another glimpse into the family’s getaway, sharing photographs of the couple with their son Delano and daughter Sybil. Other images showed Melvin spending time on the water with relatives and the larger family enjoying dinner together.
The vacation followed a frightening incident at Today
The lighthearted discussion surrounding Melvin’s beach photo came shortly after a much more serious episode involving security at Today.
On July 16, an intruder made his way backstage at Studio 1A. According to reporting cited by TV Insider, the man had allegedly been looking for Al Roker. After failing to find him, he encountered Melvin and allegedly lunged toward the anchor while using a racial slur.
NBC said Melvin alerted security and the individual was detained before being taken into custody. The network said there was no physical altercation and nobody was injured.
The incident understandably attracted attention when Melvin subsequently disappeared from the anchor desk, but his vacation had already been planned. Twellman’s guest-hosting appearance had even been discussed on Today before the security incident occurred.
Back to Studio 1A after some family time
Melvin ultimately spent more than a week away from Today. He and Carson Daly returned to Studio 1A on Thursday, July 30.
Melvin’s break ended slightly later than expected after travel trouble delayed his return to New York. He joked that the disruption had at least allowed him to spend an additional night with his wife in Charleston without their children.
By then, the infamous foot photo had become only one small part of a much fuller picture of his vacation. Czarniak’s family photographs showed Melvin enjoying time with his wife, children and relatives — exactly the kind of family break he had originally intended to share.
Still, for some Today viewers, that first beach snapshot proved surprisingly unforgettable: a peaceful ocean view, a pair of flip-flops — and one detail that generated far more conversation than Melvin probably anticipated.
