Matt Willis Feared Emma Would Leave Him as She Issued a Firm Ultimatum Before Their Wedding
Matt Willis has revealed how close his struggles with addiction came to costing him his relationship with Emma Willis, admitting he once feared his future wife would walk away if he failed to change.
The Busted singer, 43, and Strictly Come Dancing presenter Emma have been together since 2004 and married in 2008. Now parents to three children — Isabelle, 17, Ace, 14, and Trixie, 10 — the couple are regarded as one of British showbiz’s enduring partnerships. However, their relationship has faced serious challenges, particularly during Matt’s battles with drug and alcohol addiction.
Emma’s Ultimatum Before Their Wedding

Matt has spoken openly about entering rehabilitation more than once during their relationship. In a recent appearance on the Joe Marler Will See You Now podcast, he reflected on what motivated him to seek help and whether his decision was driven by a desire to save his marriage or to change his life for himself.
He admitted that his reasons had evolved over time, recalling how fear of losing Emma initially pushed him towards recovery.
“I try to do it for her. The time before the last time I went to rehab, I went to rehab for her. Because I thought she was going to leave me,” he said.
Matt also revealed that Emma had made her position clear shortly before their wedding in 2008.
“And even the very last time I went to rehab, she told me she wouldn’t marry me if I kept on like this,” he explained.
Although Emma’s ultimatum became an important factor in his decision, Matt acknowledged that lasting change ultimately had to come from within.

Matt Willis Explains What Finally Changed
Matt’s struggles with addiction continued for years. He last entered rehabilitation 17 years ago and has remained sober since 2016. He previously described how he was offered cocaine at a party after Busted reunited, leading to another difficult period.
Despite the strain, Emma stayed by his side, and their relationship has continued to grow stronger.
Looking back, Matt explained that trying to get sober for other people had not worked because he was neglecting his own needs and motivations.
“There was a little bit of her in my decision-making to go, but I think ultimately, I wanted to, I didn’t want to be that guy anymore,” he said.
He added that previous attempts to change had been driven by a desire to save relationships or make himself look better in other people’s eyes. Eventually, he realised he could no longer continue living the same way.
“I can’t do this anymore to me,” Matt recalled thinking. “Not because I cared about me, but I couldn’t bear doing this every day. I wanted to change for me.”

How Sobriety Changed His Family Life
Matt believes that getting sober has made him a better husband, father and colleague. His experience has also helped him recognise that recovery cannot depend entirely on someone else’s support or the fear of losing a relationship.
While Emma played an important role in his journey, Matt said his determination to change for himself was what ultimately made the difference.
He remains determined not to return to the person he was during his darkest period, saying he never wants to “go back to being that guy”.
Meanwhile, Emma is preparing for her latest appearance on Strictly Come Dancing. Viewers can watch the show on BBC One on Saturday, October 17, from 6.15pm to 8.35pm.
