Outer Banks releases explosive, sun-drenched trailer for 5th and final season, announces special fan event
Netflix’s teen adventure mystery will kick off one last globe-trotting treasure hunt on August 20.

- Netflix dropped the action-packed first look at the Pogues and the Kooks’ last ride on Tuesday, just eight months after the gut-wrenching season 4 finale.
- The streamer also announced a special fan event for Los Angeles obsessives, featuring a premiere screening, cast conversation, and awards show.
It’s finally the end of the line for everyone’s favorite band of ragtag Pogues.
After surviving death virtually every week for six straight years, Outer Banks is coming to an end. The beloved teen adventure mystery series launched on Netflix in April 2020 and begins its thrilling final season on Aug. 20.
That highly anticipated release date announcement arrives at the end of the season 5 trailer, which the streamer dropped on Wednesday.
“This feels like rock bottom,” a despondent, dirt-streaked Sarah (Madelyn Cline) tells a shellshocked John B (Chase Stokes) at the beginning of the action-packed trailer, setting the stakes for their last ride.
“This is rock bottom,” he replies.
As fans of the series know well by now, every episode of Outer Banks is packed to the gills with twists, turns, motorcycle chases, police standoffs, knife fights, high-stakes heists, and more. But the season 4 finale pushed the action to another level, killing off a core member of the ensemble in a move no one saw coming.
Spoiler alert: The death of JJ, played by Rudy Pankow since season 1, will be the gang’s first concern going into season 5. And a heartbreaking montage of the core cast’s transformations from the start to the end of the series that plays in the final season trailer delivers the first gut punch, when it shows a still photograph instead of new footage of JJ.
“We’re the Pogues, the throwaway fish, the lowest members of the food chain. Which means we do whatever we want whenever we want,” Stokes’ John B narrates in voiceover. “At least once upon a time we did.”
Drew Starkey’s menacing Rafe glowers, Madison Bailey’s overwhelmed Kie struggles to make sense of her new reality, and the Pogues’ turf on the titular North Carolina coastline is literally bulldozed before their eyes.
The ensemble is sure to set off for Portugal on a vengeance quest against J. Anthony Crane’s murderous Groff, and the season 5 trailer provides stunning, sun-dappled panoramas of the coast — a small respite from the physical and emotional danger sure to lay in wait.

There’s more to Wednesday’s trailer drop than just the trailer: Netflix has announced a “Pogues For Life: A Fan Farewell Event With the Cast of Outer Banks.”
According to a press release, the event takes place in Los Angeles on Aug. 15 and will feature the inaugural “Pogue Awards,” described as “the first-ever, fan-voted OBX awards show” featuring categories “made for the fans who’ve been paying attention — and their votes decide who takes home the gold.”
The event will also feature a conversation between Stokes, Cline, Bailey, and Starkey, as well as Jonathan Daviss and Carlacia Grant. A screening of the fifth season premiere will follow.
