Developed by Moira Walley-Beckett for CBC and Netflix, Anne with an E is loosely adapted from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s 1908 classic children’s novel – Anne of Green Gables.

Featuring the remarkably talented Amybeth McNulty in the leading role as orphan Anne Shirley, the young actress was chosen for the part from around 1,800 candidates across three continents who likewise auditioned for the sought-after role through an open casting call. McNulty was reportedly selected because of her dialogue delivery which was “incredibly thick and dynamic and beautiful”, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Amybeth McNulty is accompanied by Geraldine James, RH Thomson, Dalila Bela, and Lucas Jade Zumann alongside a broader ensemble cast.

Anne with an E initially premiered in March 2017 on CBC, followed by a global release on Netflix in May that same year. The programme comprises three series with 27 episodes altogether.

The period drama’s official synopsis reads: “The adventures of a young orphan girl living in late-19th-century Canada. Follow Anne as she learns to navigate her new life on Prince Edward Island in this new take on L.M. Montgomery’s classic novels.”

Boasting an impressive 91% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Anne with an E has received widespread acclaim from critics and viewers alike.
