Craig Melvin’s On-Air Call to His Wife Turns Into a Playful Today Show Moment

Craig Melvin may have been at work on the Today show, but during a commercial break on the September 4 broadcast, his attention briefly turned to his family — and a certain country music star.
While the show was preparing for Riley Green’s performance on the plaza, Melvin FaceTimed his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, and their children. What happened next quickly became part of the conversation when the cameras returned.
A quick family FaceTime becomes an on-air reveal

Following the commercial break, Laura Jarrett joked about the excitement surrounding Green’s appearance.
“If there was ever a reason to skip school, Riley Green tops the list,” Jarrett said, referring to the singer’s appeal among the Today team.
Melvin then explained why he had been on the phone.
“I was just FaceTiming my wife and children,” he said, adding that Czarniak immediately reacted when she heard Riley Green was performing.
Jarrett revealed that Czarniak is a fan of the country singer and loves his music. Melvin responded with a laugh: “Yeah, the music.”
The exchange came after the hosts had discussed the buzz surrounding Green’s arrival at Studio 1A, including the number of female crew members who were excited to see him perform.
Craig and Lindsay’s long history together

Melvin and Czarniak’s connection goes back to their time working in Washington, D.C.
The couple met while both were at NBC Washington, where Melvin was working as a news anchor beginning in 2008 and Czarniak was a sports anchor. They married in 2011 at the Church of the Holy City in Washington, the same city where their relationship began.
They later welcomed two children: their son, Delano, in 2014, and their daughter, Sybil, in 2016.
The family now lives in Westport, Connecticut. According to Realtor.com, their home is estimated to be worth $6.2 million and includes six bedrooms along with numerous amenities.
Melvin, who is originally from Columbia, South Carolina, moved to Westport from Washington, D.C., nearly a decade ago after joining Today.
Czarniak has built an accomplished broadcasting career of her own. An Emmy-winning journalist, she has worked with Fox Sports and ESPN and hosts The Artist and the Athlete, her own podcast. She has also filled in for Dylan Dreyer during the third hour of Today.
When husband and wife share the Today spotlight

Although the pair are both experienced broadcasters, appearing together on Today has not always been completely comfortable for Melvin.
Czarniak previously joined her husband on the show, opening the third hour with an enthusiastic, “It’s so great to be here.”
Melvin immediately seemed less convinced.
“Is it great?” he asked.
When Czarniak questioned why he sounded uncertain, Al Roker offered some behind-the-scenes insight into what had happened moments before the cameras went live.
According to Roker, Melvin had looked over at his wife shortly before the segment and asked, “Have you read your script?”
The remark prompted Czarniak to explain that her husband was worried she might take things in an unexpected direction while they were on air.
“He’s very nervous about me taking things off the rails,” she said.
Czarniak’s unexpected introduction to Today preparations

Czarniak also revealed that she had already received a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes routines of the Today team.
She recalled being in makeup when staff brought out some of the equipment that Melvin and the other hosts use, including a face roller.
Her reaction was immediate.
“The face roller, it’s freezing as it was in the freezer,” she said.
The lighthearted exchange offered viewers another glimpse into the dynamic between Melvin and Czarniak — two experienced broadcasters who can share the spotlight professionally while still teasing each other like a married couple.
And this time, it all began with a quick FaceTime call during a commercial break, sparked by Riley Green’s arrival on the Today plaza.
