‘Wheel of Fortune’ Fans Rally Behind Marine Veteran After Agonizing $40,000 Bonus Round Miss
A Wheel of Fortune contestant came within a word — and, in the eyes of some viewers, perhaps only a verbal stumble — of turning an already impressive night into a $60,000 payday.
Marine veteran Ron Sheppard emerged as the winner of the November 13, 2025 episode with $20,000, earning his place in the Bonus Round. But when the final 10 seconds began ticking away, Sheppard struggled to turn a nearly completed board into the exact answer the judges required.
The correct solution was “Objective Opinion.” Sheppard got tantalizingly close, but not close enough to claim the additional $40,000 waiting inside the prize envelope.

Sheppard battles his way into the Bonus Round
Sheppard, from Clarksville, Tennessee, appeared during Wheel of Fortune’s Veterans Week alongside Devin Green of Lacey, Washington, and Hillary Hudson of Jacksonville, Florida.
All three contestants had military backgrounds. Sheppard is a retired Marine, Green served in the Army, and Hudson is a Navy veteran who helps homeless veterans in her community.
The opening stages actually belonged to Green, who solved both Toss-Ups and quickly accumulated $3,000.
Sheppard soon responded.
He solved the first main puzzle, “Mess Hall of Mirrors,” and later added another victory with “Playing Minecraft.” Those solves pushed him to $8,500 and kept him firmly in contention.
Green then regained the advantage during the Prize Puzzle.
His solve of “Everybody’s So Nice and Polite” earned him a trip to British Columbia worth $8,768 and lifted his total to $14,668. For a time, it appeared Green might be the contestant heading to the Bonus Round.
Sheppard, however, wasn’t finished.
A late surge changes the game
The Triple Toss-Ups gave Sheppard the opportunity he needed.
He solved two of the three puzzles — “Newspaper” and “Sandpaper” — while Hudson took the third, “Toilet Paper,” to finally put $2,000 on her board.
The decisive moment arrived with the final puzzle, “Cried During a Commercial.”
Sheppard solved it and surged into first place with an even $20,000, overtaking Green’s $14,668 and securing his ticket to the Bonus Round. Hudson finished with $2,000.
Before the final challenge began, Ryan Seacrest shared a lighthearted exchange with Sheppard and his wife, Dawn.
Earlier, Sheppard had revealed that one secret to their 36-year marriage was having separate televisions and watching their own programs. When Dawn confirmed they would watch his Wheel of Fortune appearance together, Seacrest joked that they had finally found a show they could share.
The mood was relaxed.
Seconds later, everything would come down to one puzzle.

Sheppard selected “Thing” for his Bonus Round category.
After the standard letters R, S, T, L, N and E appeared, he chose M, G, C and O as his additional letters. That left the two-word puzzle looking like:

There was enough information on the board to provide a path toward the answer, but under the pressure of the 10-second countdown, Sheppard couldn’t immediately connect the pieces.

But the exact answer was “Objective Opinion.”
The buzzer sounded before Sheppard could deliver the required solution, and Vanna White completed the board. Seacrest acknowledged how close the contestant had come, telling him he had been “in the ballpark.”
Then came the painful reveal.
Inside Sheppard’s envelope was $40,000.
Had he solved the puzzle correctly within the allotted time, his $20,000 total would have jumped to $60,000. Instead, he left with the money he had already earned during the main game.

While some believed “Objective Opinion” was solvable from the letters on the board, others focused less on the puzzle’s difficulty and more on the way Sheppard delivered his final attempt.
