Harry’s plea for peace was seen as a ‘challenge’ to the British royal family.
Experts believe that Prince Harry’s statement seeking reconciliation is not a plea for peace, but rather a way to put pressure on the British royal family and put them in a difficult position.
Following his attention-grabbing statement in GQ magazine about his desire to reconcile with his family, Prince Harry continues to be the focus of British media attention. The Duke of Sussex’s declaration that “the most important thing is reconciliation,” made shortly after his family returned to live in England, has been deemed by experts as a public “challenge,” placing King Charles III and Prince William in an extremely awkward position.
In an interview published on October 20th, Harry emphasized: “Amidst all the upheaval in the world right now, the most important thing is reconciliation. That’s the core of the issue.” However, speaking to Page Six , royal expert and author Hugo Vickers noted that while reconciliation is “core” to Harry, the family he once turned his back on may not think so.
“Both King Charles III and Prince William were very shrewd in choosing to remain silent. They never responded publicly, even when Prince Harry said he wanted to put the past behind him. But clearly there is a huge past to overcome. Things like this should be handled privately. Constantly appearing in public and giving interviews doesn’t help,” Vickers analyzed. He added that whether Harry did it intentionally or not, his actions would still be interpreted as a challenge to his family.
When asked about his complicated relationship with Prince William – whom he hasn’t seen since 2022 – Harry emphasized that family discord is “a problem that many people face,” and added, “There are people who don’t want things to be alright. I do.”
Although representatives for the Sussexes later clarified that the statement was “in no way intended to attack my brother or any member,” Vickers pointed out that Harry and Meghan are making reconciliation more difficult by engaging in a series of activities that resemble “official duties,” most notably their visit to Nottingham last week. Last month, Harry also wore military and royal medals when attending the Invictus Spirit Awards in London.
“If Harry and Meghan go to Nottingham, or Harry wears his medals to an event… the public will look at it and see it as a royal mission. They will wonder why he’s there. Harry isn’t simply a free individual – he’s still Prince Harry,” expert Vickers stated.
He further emphasized that King Charles III’s letter announcing Harry and his wife’s return to England as commoners did not change public opinion. Harry’s appearance inadvertently created a sense of threat to the monarchy’s position, and the Duke of Sussex could only blame himself for putting himself in this difficult situation.

Regarding King Charles III, internal sources indicate that he remains in contact with his younger son by phone, although he hasn’t met him in person since his return. Meanwhile, the relationship between brothers William and Harry is described as completely “frozen.” Following numerous rifts stemming from the memoir Spare and the Netflix documentary, Prince William is now fully focused on his role as heir apparent, caring for his family, and supporting King Charles III and Princess Kate during their recovery, with no intention of reconciling with his younger brother.
