Two of country music’s most decorated acts converged on the Wharf Amphitheater on June 10 when Zach Top invited Brandon Coleman of The Red Clay Strays to the stage during his headlining Cold Beer & Country Music Tour stop in Orange Beach, Alabama. Together, they delivered a crowd-rallying rendition of George Jones’s “Bartender’s Blues,” a classic that has endured as one of the genre’s most beloved deep cuts.

Coleman, the booming-voiced frontman of The Red Clay Strays, joined Top midset for the cover, drawing an immediate reaction from the crowd. Both artists share a deep reverence for classic country, and their chemistry on stage reflected a friendship forged through previous collaboration.

The pairing marks a continuation of a creative kinship between the two acts. In April 2025, Top and Coleman surprised the crowd at the Georgia Rodeo with an impromptu version of “Where the Corn Don’t Grow,” written by Roger Murrah and Mark Alan Springer and originally recorded by Waylon Jennings. They reprised the number in May at the Red Clay Strays’ Nashville album release party for their new record, Grateful. Their “Bartender’s Blues” cover signals yet another chapter in what has become one of country music’s most anticipated stage pairings.

“Bartender’s Blues” carries significant weight in country music history. Written by James Taylor and first released as a B-side on his 1977 album JT, the song was recorded by George Jones and released as the lead single and title track of his 1978 album Bartender’s Blues. Jones’s recording reached No. 6 on the Billboard country chart, cementing it as a live mainstay throughout the remainder of his career.

Both Top and Coleman arrive at this moment riding historic momentum. Top recently took home the inaugural GRAMMY for Best Traditional Country Album for Ain’t In It for My Health at the 68th Annual GRAMMY Awards, as well as New Artist of the Year at the 59th Annual CMA Awards. The Red Clay Strays, meanwhile, won CMA Vocal Group of the Year at those same CMA Awards and followed that with ACM Group of the Year at the 2026 ACM Awards — effectively sweeping country music’s two premier group honors.

Top’s Cold Beer & Country Music Tour continues through fall 2026, with notable stops across the U.S. and Canada.
