Dion and Angélil were together for 21 years and shared a relationship shaped by loyalty, resilience, and deep affection. The two married on December 17, 1994.

They first met when Dion auditioned for Angélil at age 12. Their first official date came years later when she was 19. Dion initially kept their romance private, later explaining her hesitation was rooted in concern over public opinion.

“When I was at the age to be able to say to people [we were together] … It was like bang! Love! Love always wins,” she wrote in her memoir.

Marriage, Family, and Shared Battles

Throughout their marriage, Dion and Angélil faced significant challenges, including cancer diagnoses and struggles with infertility. Still, their partnership remained strong. They welcomed their eldest son, René-Charles, now 24, before later becoming parents to twins Nelson and Eddy, now 15.

In 1998, Angélil was diagnosed with throat cancer. The diagnosis, combined with an intense period in her career, led Dion to step back from work to focus on her family and care for her husband.

As per People, after Angélil was declared cancer-free in 2000, the couple celebrated with a vow renewal ceremony in Las Vegas. Reflecting on the Arabian Nights-themed event, Dion said, “It’s almost like a show, and we’re show business people.”

Following fertility treatments, Dion gave birth to René-Charles on January 25. After multiple rounds of IVF, the couple announced in May 2010 that they were expecting twins. Nelson, named after Nelson Mandela, and Eddy, named for French songwriter Eddy Marnay, were born on October 23.

In 2014, Dion learned that Angélil’s cancer had returned. She put her career on hold once again to care for him. That same year, Angélil stepped down from his role as her longtime manager.

Four months into her residency, Angélil died on January 14, 2016, just two days before his 74th birthday.

“René Angélil, 73, passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer,” a rep said in a statement, as per ABC.
