Luke Bryan Reveals His Songwriting Started in Church — and a Text About His Mischievous Dog Could Become His Next Country Song
Luke Bryan has revealed an unexpected piece of his songwriting history, explaining that his earliest attempts at writing music weren’t intended for Nashville or the country charts.
They were for his church youth group.
The country star opened up about his beginnings as a storyteller while joining Second Lady Usha Vance for her Storytime With the Second Lady series, which the White House describes as part of her work promoting childhood literacy.
During the conversation, Bryan explained how ordinary moments can become country songs, revealed that his mischievous Chocolate Labrador may soon inspire one of his own, and reflected on how his childhood in church encouraged his creativity.
He even traded country music for Spider-Man for a few minutes, reading Spidey and His Amazing Friends: The Lost Web Shooter!.
Luke says the best songs can start almost anywhere
Vance noted that being a country musician also means being a storyteller, with songs often building entire scenes and narratives in only a few minutes.
Bryan agreed, explaining that some of his strongest ideas have emerged simply from living his life and paying attention to what happens around him.
“With writing country music songs, the best way to get the ideas is to get out there and live your life,” he said.
For Bryan, inspiration can be as simple as appreciating a sunset or remembering something a stranger says in passing.
“Through the years some of my best songs have happened from just a little thing that a stranger said on the street to me,” he explained.
And one of his newest ideas apparently came from something even closer to home.
His Chocolate Lab could end up in a song
Bryan revealed that a friend recently sent him a text involving his Chocolate Labrador, Choc.
Instead of disappearing into an ordinary text conversation, the idea stuck.
Bryan said it has now become the basis of a song he’s working on.
“You will definitely, probably, hear about my mischievous Chocolate Lab — Choc, is his name — we’re in the works writing that song, now,” he said.
It’s a perfect example of the songwriting philosophy Bryan described during the conversation.
“Songs can pop up in many different forms, so you’ve just got to be ready to capitalize on the idea.”
But Bryan’s habit of transforming everyday experiences into lyrics goes back much further than his professional country career.
His first songwriting experiments happened at church
Asked whether he wrote music as a child, Bryan revealed where it really started.
“My first introduction into writing songs was, a lot of times, for my church youth group,” he recalled.
Rather than always creating completely original songs, the young Bryan would sometimes take popular country tracks and alter their lyrics or message so they were appropriate for church.
His comments fit with what he has previously said about the importance of his Southern Baptist upbringing.
Earlier in 2026, Bryan described himself as a “Baptist church kid” who sang in the church choir and said his faith and small-town upbringing helped guide him through difficult periods of his life.
Long before he was performing his own hits in arenas, those experiences were already teaching him how lyrics could be reshaped to tell a different story.
Bryan encourages children to create something from nothing
The conversation expanded beyond professional songwriting when Vance discussed one of her children’s interest in poetry and putting poems to music.
Bryan used the moment to explain why he believes creative writing can be valuable for children regardless of whether they ever become professional writers or musicians.
He compared songwriting to beginning with nothing and finishing with something that didn’t exist before.
That creative process, he said, can happen through songs, books and short stories — or even something as simple as inventing ghost stories around a campfire.
For Bryan, the important part is giving children opportunities to use their imaginations and express themselves.
Vance’s reading initiatives have similarly focused on encouraging children to make books and reading part of their everyday lives; the White House says more than 10,000 children participated in her 2026 Summer Reading Challenge.

Before Bryan took over storytime himself, he was asked about the books he remembered enjoying when he was younger.
He named Shel Silverstein, the celebrated author and poet behind Where the Sidewalk Ends, among his childhood favorites.
Bryan also remembered reading The Hardy Boys mysteries.
His eventual selection for the episode was considerably more superhero-focused.
Bryan read Spidey and His Amazing Friends: The Lost Web Shooter!, smiling his way through unfamiliar vocabulary and adding some spontaneous commentary along the way.
It offered a very different kind of storytelling from the country songs he normally performs.
One teacher still stands out as a real-life hero
The conversation ended on another personal memory when Bryan was asked about the heroes in his own life.
Instead of naming another famous musician, he looked back to school.
Bryan singled out his high school drama teacher, crediting the teacher with helping him come out of his shell.
It’s a fitting connection to the larger story Bryan shared during his appearance.
Long before the country hits, television appearances and packed concerts, his ability to perform and tell stories was being shaped by experiences in church, school and everyday life.
Decades later, he still appears to be looking for songs in exactly the same places.
And if his latest revelation is any indication, even one mischievous Chocolate Lab can provide the beginning of the next story.
