Sky Just Renewed One Of Wales’ Most Gripping Crime Dramas — And Fans Are Getting Six More Episodes Of Detective Eric Bull. Well, that didn’t take long… The Welsh crime drama that had viewers hooked from the very first episode is officially coming back, after its first series became Sky’s biggest original drama launch since The Day of the Jackal

Sky Confirms Six-Part Follow-Up to Acclaimed Crime Drama Under Salt Marsh

Date set for 'gripping' new Wales-set detective drama with star-studded cast | Wales Online

Sky has commissioned a new six-episode instalment set in the world of Under Salt Marsh, with Rafe Spall returning as Detective Eric Bull.

The currently untitled follow-up will move the story away from Wales and place Bull at the centre of a new murder investigation in an isolated Scottish mining village. Production is scheduled to begin in Scotland in 2027, although a release date has not been announced.

A major success for Sky

Created, written and directed by Claire Oakley, Under Salt Marsh premiered in January 2026 and received widespread critical acclaim. It became Sky’s biggest original drama launch since The Day of the Jackal.

Set and filmed in Wales, the first series begins during a devastating storm in the fictional town of Morfa Halen. Schoolteacher and former police detective Jackie Ellis, played by Kelly Reilly, discovers the body of a schoolboy in a rainwater ditch.

The investigation brings Jackie back into contact with Detective Eric Bull, played by Spall, as the community’s secrets begin to emerge.

The forthcoming series will not return to Wales. Instead, Bull relocates to a remote Scottish mining village described as struggling beneath the weight of its own hidden history.

A murder investigation draws the detective into the community’s secrets while also bringing him closer to the truth about his own past. The story will introduce a new setting, a new group of characters and another central mystery.

Oakley said she was delighted to take the drama to a different part of the United Kingdom and explore both a gripping investigation and long-buried secrets.

She also praised Spall’s performance, saying he brought Bull’s distinctive personality to life brilliantly in the first series. Continuing the character’s journey, she added, was “an absolute pleasure.”

Meghan Lyvers, Managing Director of Scripted Originals at Sky, said Under Salt Marsh had formed a strong connection with viewers, making the broadcaster eager to return to Oakley’s world.

Lyvers praised Oakley’s ability to create richly developed characters and memorable locations. She also highlighted the complexity and humanity Spall brought to Bull, describing his return at the centre of the new story as fantastic.

Elwen Rowlands, executive producer and CEO of Little Door Productions, said the company was proud to continue the world of Under Salt Marsh with another atmospheric story from Oakley.

According to Rowlands, the audience response to the original series demonstrated the appeal of its distinctive setting, complicated characters and compelling storytelling.

The new instalment will retain the emotional and cinematic qualities of the first series while expanding its world through a different community and mystery.
