American Idol standout Braden Rumfelt delivered a powerful surprise performance this week that is quickly spreading across social media, as the rising singer brought Southern soul to a beloved classic during a special pop-up concert.

The 22-year-old singer returned to the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina on Thursday, March 5, for an impromptu show at Western Carolina University. The event, held at the campus University Center, drew an enthusiastic crowd long before the music even started. Fans of all ages lined up nearly an hour ahead of the 6:30 p.m. performance, eager to see the hometown talent who has been turning heads on the national stage.

During the set, Rumfelt treated the crowd to several songs that viewers recognized from his journey on American Idol, including Girl Crush by Little Big Town and I’m Not the Only One by Sam Smith.
But one performance in particular stole the spotlight.
Rumfelt took on the legendary country ballad Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton — a song widely considered one of the most difficult modern country covers. From the very first note, the young singer delivered a smooth, soulful rendition that had the crowd cheering and phones raised in the air.
Clips of the performance quickly began circulating online, with many fans praising the emotion and authenticity he brought to the iconic song.

The moment was especially meaningful for the local community that has followed Rumfelt’s journey long before television audiences discovered him.
“The amount of positive feedback that I’ve received from people in public, locally, stuff like that, it’s just been beautiful to see,” Rumfelt told the crowd during the event. “I never thought I’d get that much positive reinforcement from a bunch of people that hardly even know me… so I just want to say thanks.”

Rumfelt’s momentum comes at a major moment in his career. Just days earlier, it was announced that the Murphy native had advanced to the Top 30 on American Idol for the “Ohana Round,” filmed at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii. The round will determine which contestants move forward into the coveted Top 20.
The singer has already impressed the show’s judges with his emotional storytelling and rich country tone. During Hollywood Week, he performed Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One,” prompting judge Luke Bryan to praise him enthusiastically.
“Can you make it look harder next time?” Bryan joked. “We knew you were special in your audition.”

Bryan later leaned toward fellow judges Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie and whispered a prediction that quickly caught fans’ attention: “He may win.”
Rumfelt’s path to music, however, was not always planned. A former high school athlete, he once dreamed of playing college baseball before a congenital condition affecting his legs forced him to undergo two major surgeries and ultimately step away from the sport.
Music — something he had grown up performing in church with his family — became the path forward.
