Nevertheless, it’s the performances of the two principal actors that have garnered the most attention. Partridge’s Tewkesbury has featured in the series from its 2020 inception alongside Millie’s Enola.
Now, Netflix has unveiled audition footage showing their initial chemistry read together. For those unfamiliar, a chemistry read is a late stage in the audition process.
One actor may have already secured their part by this point. It is employed to determine whether the performers share a strong connection that will come across on screen.
Discussing the experience, Partridge confessed: “I remember being intimidated, but [director] Harry Bradbeer was just being lovely, and Millie was really friendly,” he says. “It was a bit of a whirlwind, to be honest. I remember exactly where it was, and I remember going with my mom to the audition.
“It was the first audition where I really thought, ‘I can actually have fun while I’m doing this.’ It wasn’t a case of, ‘I’m just going to read the lines and say them to my mom,’ who I did all my self-tapes with.”
Yet, it appears that Louis needn’t have worried as his co-star was persuaded the moment he walked through the door. Speaking to Tudum, Millie revealed she felt he was right ‘in her heart’ immediately.
She recalled: “I do remember when Louis walked in, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s Tewkesbury. That’s him’. He sat down, and he was very nervous, red cheeks, he’d just come from French class, he was still in his school uniform.”
The Stranger Things actor isn’t alone, as supporters were swift to respond to the audition clips. One remarked: “That chemistry was electric from day one Enola and Tewkesbury forever!”.
Another commented: “Looking back at this knowing how incredible the movies turned out is so comforting. They were cast perfectly.
