A heartbroken husband has spoken of the unbearable moment his world changed after his wife and daughter were among five divers who failed to return during a deep-cave expedition in the Maldives — insisting he cannot believe a highly experienced diver would have knowingly taken dangerous risks.

Carlo Sommacal said his wife, Monica Montefalcone, 52, was “among the best divers on the face of the earth” and would never have placed their daughter, Giorgia Sommacal, 20, in danger. Speaking through grief, he said he remains convinced that something unexpected unfolded beneath the surface.

“The only certainty I have is that my wife has always been conscientious,” he reportedly said, adding that there had to be another explanation for what happened during the dive.

Monica, a respected ecology professor, and Giorgia, a university student, had traveled with a research group linked to the University of Genoa. Two of the other victims were also reportedly part of the same academic expedition.

The tragedy has left investigators examining possible factors surrounding the dive, with experts pointing to theories including oxygen exposure complications and underwater panic. Authorities are still trying to reconstruct the group’s final moments beneath the surface.

Carlo said his last message to his wife before the dive was a simple WhatsApp note telling her that their cats were fine — an ordinary moment that has now become a heartbreaking final memory.

Recovery operations have also faced setbacks after severe weather interrupted search efforts. Earlier confusion over recovered bodies only deepened the anguish for waiting families.

Now, while trying to remain strong for his son Matthew, Carlo says he is left holding onto one thought above all others: that the experienced diver he knew so well would never have made reckless choices.
