Harry and Meghan’s Potential Cotswolds Neighbour Has a Blunt Warning: “We Can Sniff B******t”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be heading toward a very different kind of British life — and one famous Cotswolds resident has already offered Meghan a remarkably blunt piece of advice.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, the interior designer and television personality who lives in the Cotswolds with his family, says the Duchess of Sussex could discover that fitting into the local community has little to do with celebrity status and everything to do with authenticity.

His warning was characteristically colourful.

“I think she’s going to need to be very genuine,” Llewelyn-Bowen said, adding that people in his part of the Cotswolds “can really sniff b******t” and are quick to recognise when someone is not being themselves.

Yet beneath the headline-grabbing remark was a surprisingly warm message: if Harry and Meghan do become neighbours, he would welcome them.

Harry and Meghan’s return has reignited Cotswolds speculation

Harry and Meghan arrived back in Britain this week with their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, marking their most significant return since they stepped away from royal duties and moved to North America six years ago.

The family reportedly travelled privately from California and arrived at Birmingham Airport on Wednesday.

According to Reuters, the Sussexes intend to remain in Britain for an extended period and live outside London, while Archie and Lilibet are expected to begin school in the UK in September.

They are returning as private individuals, rather than working royals, and are not expected to take up residence in a royal property.

Their exact UK home has not been confirmed.

But the Cotswolds continues to attract attention as a possible destination, with reports suggesting the couple have been looking at properties in the area.

And their choice of Birmingham Airport has only added fuel to the speculation.

Llewelyn-Bowen noted that the airport provides convenient access to the Cotswolds, although the decision to land there is certainly not proof that Harry and Meghan have chosen the region as their new home.

The Cotswolds has a very different social scene

If the Sussexes do settle there, they would hardly be the first famous family to make the Cotswolds home.

The area has long attracted wealthy and well-known residents, but Llewelyn-Bowen believes there is an important distinction between the celebrity-heavy parts of the region and the community where he lives.

He described his own corner of the Cotswolds as far less impressed by fame.

That could make the transition particularly interesting for Meghan, whose public profile has followed her closely on both sides of the Atlantic.

“It is going to be interesting to see how the Duchess fits in,” Llewelyn-Bowen said, explaining that people in his part of the Cotswolds are “much less impressed by celebrity.”

He pointed to Princess Anne as an example.

According to Llewelyn-Bowen, Harry’s aunt could turn up at a local train station without attracting the kind of attention one might expect from a senior member of the Royal Family.

For him, that lack of fuss is precisely what makes the area appealing.

Meghan has been told to be ‘very genuine’

The strongest part of his warning was aimed directly at Meghan.

“I think she’s going to need to be very genuine,” he said.

He then added the colourful observation that local residents can “sniff b******t” and know when people are not being authentic.

The comment is likely to generate plenty of discussion given Meghan’s complicated relationship with British public opinion.

But Llewelyn-Bowen was speaking about his own observations of the local culture, rather than claiming to represent every resident of the Cotswolds.

And his comments were not an outright rejection of the Sussexes.

In fact, he made clear that he would be happy to have the family nearby.

School gates could offer the biggest test

Perhaps the most revealing part of Llewelyn-Bowen’s remarks was his focus on ordinary family life.

If Archie and Lilibet begin school in Britain as reported, Harry and Meghan could find themselves taking part in school runs, attending local activities and encountering other parents on a regular basis.

That would be a very different experience from their life in Montecito.

Llewelyn-Bowen jokingly suggested that Meghan should not arrive at the school gates with too many “airs and graces”, describing some of the local women as formidable personalities he would not personally want to cross.

The underlying point is simple: in a close-knit community, being famous may not carry quite the same weight as it does in Hollywood.

For the Sussexes, that could mean learning to navigate a world where celebrity is less important than fitting in.

A different world from Montecito

For the past six years, Montecito has provided Harry and Meghan with both privacy and proximity to some of America’s most prominent figures.

Their California life has placed them within a social circle encompassing entertainment, business and media, while their multimillion-dollar property has offered significant separation from the public.

The Cotswolds can boast its own collection of famous residents, but Llewelyn-Bowen believes the atmosphere is different.

He suggested Harry and Meghan may not have the same “celebrity safety net” they have enjoyed in California, even referencing Oprah Winfrey as an example of the high-profile world surrounding their American life.

That does not necessarily mean the Sussexes are turning their backs on California.

People reports that they intend to keep their Montecito home while spending substantially more time in Britain.

The result could therefore be a transatlantic family life rather than a complete move away from the United States.

Harry may have an easier time settling in

Interestingly, Llewelyn-Bowen believes Harry could have an easier time finding his place in the area than Meghan.

Harry already has longstanding connections to Gloucestershire and the surrounding countryside through his father.

He and Meghan also previously lived in the Cotswolds shortly after their wedding in 2018.

That chapter ended after concerns over privacy emerged when details of their rented property became public, eventually leading the couple to move to Frogmore Cottage.

Almost eight years later, the possibility of returning to the same broader region would represent a very different chapter of their lives.

This time, they would be returning as private citizens and, reportedly, with their children’s education playing a central role in their plans.

The blunt warning ended on a friendly note

For all the attention surrounding his comments, Llewelyn-Bowen’s message was not as hostile as the headline might suggest.

He said he would welcome Harry, Meghan and their children as neighbours.

He even offered his professional services if the couple needed help decorating a new home, joking about everything from curtains to cushions.

His final assessment was therefore considerably more light-hearted than his warning about being able to “sniff b******t.”

He simply questioned whether his particular corner of the Cotswolds would necessarily be “Meghan’s cup of tea.”

For now, however, the most important detail remains unresolved.

Harry and Meghan are back in Britain, and Archie and Lilibet are reportedly preparing for school in the UK. But neither the couple nor their representatives has publicly confirmed that the Cotswolds will become their permanent British base.

Until that happens, the prospect of famous neighbours, country living and Sussex family life at the school gates remains speculation.

But if the Cotswolds does become their new home, Llewelyn-Bowen has already made one thing clear: celebrity may open the door, but fitting in will depend on something far less glamorous — simply being genuine.
