They Brought James Herriot’s World To Life In 1978… But Behind The Warmth Of All Creatures Great And Small, The Original Cast Lived Through Heartbreaking Stories That No Script Could Fully Capture. A New Generation Is Falling In Love With The Gentle Charm Of All Creatures Great And Small, But For Longtime Fans, The Original 1978 Series Holds A Special Place In Television History.

Skeldale House Revisited: Where the Original Cast of All Creatures Great and Small Ventured After 90 Episodes

All Creatures Great and Small stars Christopher Timothy, Lynda Bellingham and Robert Hardy

Decades before Channel 5 revived James Herriot’s beloved Yorkshire Dales memoirs with Nicholas Ralph and Samuel West, the BBC’s original television adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small defined Sunday-night viewing across the UK.

Spanning 90 episodes over two distinct eras—the classic 1978–1980 book-faithful run and the 1988–1990 continuation—the series established a beloved core ensemble whose careers went on to cross paths with Doctor Who, the Harry Potter franchise, British daytime soap operas, and the West End stage.

The Skeldale Trio: Careers After the Practice

  • Christopher Timothy (James Herriot):
  • Leading all 90 episodes as the earnest Scottish veterinary surgeon, Timothy became a staple of British television. He went on to anchor BBC daytime as Dr. Mac McGuire in Doctors (nearly 900 episodes) and joined EastEnders as Ted Murray. Staying closely tied to Herriot’s real-life Yorkshire stomping grounds, he served as the original narrator for Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet across its first nine series.

  • Robert Hardy, CBE (Siegfried Farnon):

Hardy’s volatile, cantankerous, yet fiercely loyal senior partner earned him a 1980 BAFTA nomination. Beyond Skeldale House, Hardy was renowned for playing Winston Churchill across numerous productions (earning another BAFTA nod) and reached a global generation of film fans as Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge in four Harry Potter films. Hardy passed away in August 2017 at the age of 91.

  • Peter Davison (Tristan Farnon):

Davison’s role as the mischief-making younger Farnon served as his launchpad into global stardom when the BBC cast him as the Fifth Doctor in Doctor Who (1981–1984), making him the youngest actor to pilot the TARDIS until Matt Smith’s casting in 2009. He built an extensive stage career with Olivier-nominated turns in West End musicals (Gypsy, Spamalot, Legally Blonde), reprised the Fifth Doctor in recent mini-episodes, and signed on to join Channel 5’s mystery drama The Good Ship Murder.

The Matriarchs of Skeldale House

  • Carol Drinkwater (Helen Herriot, née Alderson – Series 1–3):
  • Drinkwater originated the role of Helen across the first 39 episodes before departing in 1980. She pivoted into a prolific writing career, penning bestselling memoirs chronicling the restoration of an olive farm in Provence, which later spawned her Channel 5 travel documentary series Carol Drinkwater’s Secret Provence.

  • Lynda Bellingham, OBE (Helen Herriot – Series 4–7):

Taking over the role of Helen for the show’s 1988–1990 return, Bellingham was already an established screen regular and a national fixture as the matriarch in the long-running “Oxo Family” commercials. She later starred in At Home with the Braithwaites and became one of the defining panellists on ITV’s Loose Women (making over 300 appearances). Bellingham passed away from colon cancer in October 2014 at age 66.

  • Mary Hignett (Mrs. Edna Hall – Series 1–3):

Hignett grounded the veterinary household as Skeldale House’s warm-hearted housekeeper. Tragically, she died in 1980 at age 64 shortly after filming wrapped on Series 3. Her passing was acknowledged on-screen during the 1983 Christmas special, with her fellow castmates attending her service alongside her husband, Dixon of Dock Green actor Michael Brennan.
