Across Just Four Episodes, The Story Draws Viewers Into A World Of Pain, Difficult Choices And Raw Human Vulnerability, Building An Emotional Weight That Becomes Harder To Bear With Every Passing Moment. There Are No Endless Seasons To Get Lost In And No Easy Escape From The Story’s Impact. Just Four Parts Of Powerful Storytelling, With Graham At The Centre Of A Drama That Demands Your Full Attention. The Hardest Part May Not Be Watching What Happens To The Characters. It May Be Realising How Deeply Their Story Has Affected You.

Stephen Graham has built a reputation for delivering performances that stay with audiences long after the credits roll. But in The Virtues, the acclaimed actor takes on one of his most emotionally devastating roles, playing a recovering alcoholic forced to confront the painful memories he has spent years trying to bury.

This four-part drama is a deeply moving exploration of trauma, addiction, family and the difficult choices that come with facing the past. Graham plays Joseph, a troubled man whose fragile recovery begins to unravel after a devastating change in his personal life. What follows is an emotional journey towards understanding his childhood, confronting long-suppressed memories and deciding whether to seek forgiveness or revenge.

Co-written by Jack Thorne, the creator of Adolescence, the series combines a gripping story with a remarkable central performance from Graham. Raw, unsettling and thought-provoking, The Virtues showcases the actor at his most vulnerable, delivering a portrayal that is both heartbreaking and difficult to forget.

With all four episodes now available to stream on Channel 4, here’s everything you need to know about the drama, from its storyline and cast to where you can watch it.

What Is The Virtues About?

Set in Liverpool, The Virtues follows Joseph (Stephen Graham), a recovering alcoholic whose life takes a devastating turn when his former partner, Debbie (Juliet Ellis), moves to Australia with their nine-year-old son.

After two years of sobriety, Joseph struggles to cope with the separation and falls back into drinking. When he wakes up suffering from an overwhelming hangover, both physically and emotionally, he decides he can no longer continue living as he has been. Instead, he boards a boat to Ireland, determined to confront the painful childhood experiences that have haunted him for years.

Joseph’s journey brings him back into contact with his sister, Anna (Helen Behan), whom he has not seen since they were children. His unexpected arrival leaves Anna stunned, but she eventually persuades her husband, Michael (Frank Laverty), to welcome Joseph into their home and give him a job at the family’s building company.

The opportunity offers Joseph a chance to rebuild his life, but his new surroundings also bring him closer to people and experiences connected to his troubled past. Among them is Craigy (Mark O’Halloran), a fellow labourer whose shadowy history is closely linked to Joseph’s own.

Things become even more complicated when Joseph meets Dinah (Niamh Algar), a rebellious woman who makes a dramatic entrance after punching her boyfriend out of Anna’s front door. Despite their troubled lives, Joseph and Dinah quickly form a connection. Like Joseph, Dinah carries painful memories of her own, and their shared experiences create an understanding between them.

As the series progresses, Joseph gradually begins to piece together the fragmented memories of his childhood trauma. The more he uncovers, however, the harder it becomes to decide how to move forward. Ultimately, he must confront a deeply personal question: whether to choose forgiveness or pursue vengeance.

Stephen Graham’s Preparation for the Role

To portray Joseph convincingly, Graham undertook extensive research into alcoholism, childhood trauma and the ways people respond to deeply distressing experiences.

Speaking to Channel 4 about his preparation, the actor explained that he watched numerous documentaries featuring people who had experienced similar situations. He also explored the causes of alcoholism and the psychological processes that can lead someone to suppress painful memories.

Graham reflected on the mind’s ability to shut away difficult experiences, explaining that people can sometimes block out memories entirely, only for fragments of those experiences to resurface unexpectedly.

His research helped inform a performance that captures Joseph’s emotional turmoil without losing sight of the person beneath his struggles. The result is a powerful portrayal of a man attempting to make sense of his past while searching for a way to live with it.

What Other Stephen Graham Dramas Can You Watch?

If The Virtues leaves you wanting to explore more of Stephen Graham’s work, there are other performances worth adding to your watchlist.

The Walk-In

In The Walk-In, Graham takes on the role of Matthew Collins, a former neo-Nazi who becomes an activist and infiltrates a far-right group. Based on a true story, the drama follows Collins’s efforts in the aftermath of the murder of MP Jo Cox.

The series offers another opportunity to see Graham tackle a challenging role rooted in real-world events. You can watch The Walk-In on ITVX.

The Damned United

For a different side of Graham’s acting career, The Damned United is another title to consider.

The film centres on the turbulent 44-day period when outspoken football manager Brian Clough, played by Michael Sheen, took charge of Leeds United. Graham plays Billy Bremner, the team’s captain, in a story set against the tensions and challenges surrounding Clough’s brief tenure.

The film provides a different kind of drama from The Virtues, but it is another example of Graham’s ability to bring memorable characters to the screen.

The Damned United is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Whether you’re drawn to emotionally demanding character studies or gripping dramas inspired by real events, Stephen Graham’s performances offer plenty to explore. But for those seeking one of his most heartbreaking roles, The Virtues stands out for its unflinching portrayal of trauma, its complex characters and its moving examination of what it means to face the past.
