Ismail Kartal Resigns Just Minutes After Fenerbahce’s Champions League Return — Even His Players Were Caught Completely Off Guard

Ismail Kartal has announced his resignation as Fenerbahce manager just minutes after leading the Turkish giants into their first Champions League match since 2008.

Kartal’s dramatic decision came immediately after Fenerbahce fought back from behind to draw 1-1 with Roma, with English defender Archie Brown scoring the equaliser after Bryan Cristante had given the visitors the lead.

But while the point marked an encouraging return to Europe’s elite competition, the night ended in extraordinary confusion when Kartal revealed he intended to step down.

Kartal, who only took charge during the summer and had returned to Fenerbahce for a fourth spell, announced his decision after the final whistle.

He went on to thank the supporters, staff, media and players, explaining that he believed the decision would “pave the way” for the club.

But the speed of the announcement left his own squad scrambling to understand what had happened.

Brown, who had just rescued Fenerbahce with his equaliser, appeared genuinely stunned when told during his post-match media duties that Kartal had announced his resignation.

“What do you mean he resigned?” the Birmingham-born defender said.

“As what? As coach? What do you mean, resigned? He’s said he’s not the coach anymore? I didn’t know about this.”

The reaction underlined just how suddenly Kartal had made his decision.

The manager had apparently not informed his players before making the announcement, leaving some of them to discover the news while speaking to reporters after the match.

Fenerbahce President Denies Resignation

The situation became even more confusing when Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim appeared to contradict Kartal’s announcement.

Yildirim said he had not known about the resignation and insisted Kartal would continue as manager.

“If I had known about the resignation, would I have come? None of us knew,” he said.

The president also hit back at criticism surrounding Fenerbahce’s squad and their return to the Champions League, arguing that Kartal had delivered what the club had asked of him.

“We said we would be champions. We said we would qualify for the Champions League. We did. With whom did we do it? With İsmail Kartal.”
