Follow Daily Mail Sport’s live coverage of the latest updates as Mexico take on England in the last 16 of the World Cup in Mexico City.
Up next, Norway
England have won themselves a date with Norway.
Now, if you offered the Three Lions a quarter-final with Norway before this tournament, I have no doubt that they would have snapped your hand off for it.
However, I’m not so sure now.
The Norwegians have been brilliant at this World Cup, dispatching Brazil at the MetLife emphatically in the round of 16.
Erling Haaland has been bang at it throughout teh tournament, bagging yet another brace against Brazil. The England defence may know him well, but that doesn’t necessarily count for much when the striker is in this form.
Whatever happens in that match, though, we know that we will be in for yet another epic in Miami.
That game will take place on Saturday, 11 July at 10pm UK time.
‘One of England’s greatest results’
Wayne Rooney, former England striker, on BBC One:
That was one of the greatest results, performances. They showed attitude, grit, desire, everything you would have wanted an England team to show they showed tonight.
Going down to 10 we knew it was going to be difficult. They sat in and I was worried that we went too deep too early, but they put their bodies on the line. The centre-backs and Pickford were outstanding.
We were the better team until the red card and then we showed a lesson in heading the ball out of the box, blocking shots, just brilliant.
England make history
Azteca this. Unbeaten record that.
All the talk before this game was about how much of a fortress the Azteca was for Mexico, and that they can’t be beaten there. Well, they have been now.
England are the first team ever to beat Mexico at the Azteca in the FIFA World Cup – they were unbeaten in 10 games there before today.
And it means that their record at the stadium now stands at three losses in 90 matches.
A historic and iconic victory for England.
Can England go all the way?
Well, Wayne Rooney’s seems to think so.
I have to admit, I agree. After managing to get through Mexico in the most hostile atmosphere they will ever have to endure, and with 10 men, they will believe they can beat anyone.
They showed resilience against DR Congo, and then again here, both in different ways. No matter the scenario, the Three Lions are managing to pull through.
This team just feels that little bit different from those of the past.
‘England can win the World Cup’
Wayne Rooney, former England striker, on BBC One:
This has shown we have a team who are capable of winning the World Cup. The belief this will give to these players his huge.
WATCH: Kane bags again
Pressure, what pressure?
Harry Kane has the weight of a nation on his shoulders as he stepped up for this penalty, with the weight of the opposition nation working against him.
But he came up trumps again and ended up scoring the goal that takes England through to the quarter-finals.
Watch and enjoy.
Captain Kane delivers again
Harry Kane never lets England down.
Was tonight his best performance? No, far from it. But that doesn’t matter, he still managed to bag a goal, and even an assist, to send England on their way to the last eight.
We will get to Jude Bellingham later, but without both him and Kane, I really don’t know where England would be.
Both have come in clutch this tournament for England, with Kane now having six goals to his name at this tournament, matching his tally from the 2018 World Cup.
In fact, with another goal and assist today, Harry Kane has now been involved in 81 goals in 63 appearances for club and country in all competitions in 2025-26 (73 goals, 8 assists).
Just outrageous numbers.
Kane: ‘I’ve just been singing, I can’t really talk’
Harry Kane, England captain, speaking to BBC One:
It was a crazy game. We had to fight and we had to find something. I’ve just been singing, I can’t really talk. The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way. Incredible, unbelievable support. [I’m] speechless.
On the Mexico penalty decision:
I thought I got to the ball first, it was one of those days. The ref gave a lot against us. In the end it didn’t matter so I’m happy.
On Jordan Henderson:
Jordan [Henderson] just fell over there, I think he’s okay, just something to do with his arm.
England survive onslaught
You have to take a look at this.
One of the directors at Opta has just shared what England’s heat map looked like in those last 30 minutes.
As you can see, they were under the pump for a very, very long time, and somehow managed to hold out for the win.
The heart and desire shown by the whole team to keep that Mexico side out has me believing that this England team could go very far in this tournament.
That was one hell of a defensive display.
Scenes of celebration
Those were some of the biggest post-match celebrations I have ever seen from England at a World Cup.
After all the pressure they were under in the second half, the valve released as soon as that whistle went.
And these pictures show how much it means.
Injured England man identified as Jordan Henderson
OK, so we have had some clarification on who the injured member of the England party is.
Harry Kane has just confirmed it’s Jordan Henderson.
Kane said he fell over the advertising hoardings and hurt his arm, but is doing OK.
So the midfielder didn’t play a single minute today, but still managed to get injured and pick up a yellow card.
Quite the crazy evening for him.
Kane has lost his voice
Harry Kane literally can’t speak right now.
He is currently being interviewed by the BBC and sounds like a 14-year-old whose voice is breaking.
There is lots of laughter in this office because, frankly, it’s very funny to listen to.
Sums up how mental that game was.
