Prince William Makes Surprise Graham Norton Show Appearance Alongside Cate Blanchett and Other A-List Guests
Prince William received a warm welcome from the audience as he made an unexpected appearance on The Graham Norton Show, becoming the first royal to take a seat on the programme’s famous red sofa.

The Prince of Wales joined a special edition of the BBC chat show dedicated to the Earthshot Prize, the environmental initiative he founded in 2020. The episode also featured Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett, Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham and Australian conservationist Robert Irwin.
The programme airs on BBC One on Friday, October 23, at 10.40pm.
Prince William Joins Graham Norton for Earthshot Prize Special
William’s appearance brought a royal presence to Norton’s celebrated sofa, where the Prince discussed both his personal interests and his work to address the global environmental crisis.
During the conversation, he spoke about his support for Aston Villa and his appreciation of films directed by Christopher Nolan. However, the central focus was the Earthshot Prize and its ambition to accelerate solutions to climate change.
William established the initiative in 2020 to identify promising environmental innovations and help them reach a wider audience. On the show, he discussed the importance of approaching the climate crisis with both urgency and optimism.

He explained how the prize helps promising innovators around the world develop their ideas and expand the reach of their work. The initiative also aims to connect people working on environmental solutions with the resources and support needed to make a greater difference.
The Prince emphasised that tackling climate change requires collective action rather than relying on any single individual or organisation. By bringing together innovators, investors and advocates from around the world, the Earthshot Prize hopes to build a network capable of driving meaningful progress.
Cate Blanchett, Hannah Waddingham and Robert Irwin Praise the Initiative

William was joined by three high-profile guests who also have connections to the Earthshot Prize.
Cate Blanchett, a member of the Earthshot Prize Council, described the initiative as a “tapestry of solutions”, reflecting the range of ideas and approaches needed to address environmental challenges.
Hannah Waddingham, who hosted the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards in Singapore, praised the support available to the competition’s finalists. She highlighted how connecting innovators with specialist expertise, professional networks and investment can help them develop their projects and expand their impact.
Robert Irwin, an Earthshot Prize global ambassador, discussed the initiative’s potential to inspire younger generations. He highlighted its role in encouraging young people to become more engaged with environmental issues and helping nurture a new generation of campaigners.
The conversation began before William’s arrival, with Norton discussing the Earthshot Prize alongside Blanchett, Waddingham and Irwin. The host then revealed the connection shared by his three guests before introducing the Prince of Wales, prompting cheers from the audience.
Prince and Princess of Wales Tease the Appearance on Instagram

Although William’s appearance came as a surprise to viewers, there had been a brief hint beforehand.
The Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Instagram Story featured a photograph of William seated on the programme’s familiar red sofa. The image showed him wearing a blue suit, accompanied by tags for The Graham Norton Show and the Earthshot Prize, as well as two eye emojis.
The special episode also included a musical performance by singer Jorja Smith, adding another element to the evening’s line-up.
Prince William Is Not the First Royal to Appear on a Chat Show

Despite the significance of William’s appearance on Norton’s programme, he is not the first member of the Royal Family to take part in a television chat show.
Princess Anne appeared on The Wogan Show in 1985. The following year, the late Prince Philip also made an appearance on the programme.
William’s visit marks another example of the Royal Family engaging with mainstream television, this time using a high-profile entertainment programme to draw attention to the environmental work at the heart of his Earthshot Prize initiative.
