ITV’s The 1% Club Had An “Impossible” Question That Eliminated 30 Contestants And Set A Show Record
One deceptively simple question proved to be a major stumbling block on ITV’s The 1% Club, leaving dozens of contestants out of the running in a moment that made history on the popular quiz show.
Hosted by Lee Mack, the programme challenges 100 contestants to work their way through 15 increasingly difficult questions, with the ultimate prize of £100,000 waiting for those who can make it to the final stage.
Unlike traditional quiz shows that test general knowledge and facts, The 1% Club focuses on logic, reasoning and the ability to spot details that others might overlook. Each question is tested on a group of 1,000 people beforehand, with the results determining its difficulty level. The toughest questions are those that only 1% of people can answer correctly.
But one particular puzzle proved so challenging that it earned a place in the show’s history.

The Question That Sent 30 Contestants Home
As reported by Birmingham Live, Lee Mack revealed that the question had set a record after 30 contestants answered incorrectly and were eliminated from the competition.
With so many players falling at the same hurdle, the puzzle demonstrated just how easily a seemingly straightforward challenge can catch people out.
The question was simple:
“How many eyes can you see in the image below?”
At first glance, it might have seemed like a question that required little more than careful counting. However, the trick lay in how contestants interpreted what they were being asked to identify.

Why So Many People Got The Answer Wrong
The puzzle caught contestants out because many of them counted the letter “i” alongside the eyes they could see in the image.
That approach led some people to arrive at an answer of 22. However, the correct answer was 15.

The challenge was to count the eyes themselves, rather than include the letter “i” in the total. It was a small but crucial distinction, and one that proved enough to eliminate 30 players from the game.
The question highlighted the kind of thinking that makes The 1% Club different from other television quizzes. Success depends not only on spotting patterns and solving puzzles, but also on reading each question carefully and resisting the temptation to jump to an answer too quickly.

With £100,000 potentially at stake, even the smallest oversight can make all the difference.
So, would you have spotted the trick and answered 15 correctly, or would you have been among those who fell for the misleading count?
